Tips On Local Contractors and Fraud
How to Protect Yourself From Being Taken Advantage Of by Local Contractors
There are a lot of ways local contractors can try to take your money and run if you are not careful. Just because a person seems nice and honest doesn"t mean that they are. There are some signs to look for that can tell you if you should or shouldn"t do business with a contractor.
Always do your research. If a deal seems way to good to be true, it probably is. Never pay for a job up front or pay with cash. This is an easy way for a thief to take the money and never do any work at all.
Local contractors should never be pushy. Someone who offers a rebate for referrals is a bad sign. Pushy contractors that come door-to door are a big no-no! Local contractors who pressure you with a one-time deal are definitely fraudulent. Half of the time, these people don"t even have a phone number you could look up in the phone book.
Local Contractors
Local contractors must still have proper license, insurance, materials, permits and contracts. Reputable local contractors should also have references and a portfolio for viewing.
You have the right to be selective when it comes to any contractor that will be doing work on your property. Pay close attention to their cleanliness, timeliness and attention to detail. You should interview several candidates for the job before choosing.
Fraudulent local contractors are out there just waiting for someone to jump at their trap. Use this knowledge to help you choose your next candidate carefully when it comes to your current or future home improvement projects.
It is also always a good idea to avoid doing business with family and friends. If for some reason the estimates do not add up, things can get ugly. Someone gets overcharged or shorted and then the tension can create lots of problems.
