Finding local contractors to bid on or complete renovation projects can be done by several methods. Looking in your local telephone directory, online at your local business directory or contacting your chamber of commerce can all be easy ways to find local contractors.
Once you have a list of people to talk to about your potential project, consider several factors.

Do they specialize in the type of renovation or remodeling project you want?

Most contractors want you to pay them a portion of the cost of the materials up front and potentially part of the labor fees as well so that they can fund the project. This is especially true with smaller companies. This isn't something that should alarm you but researching their reputation becomes even more vital in this case. Larger companies may fund the project themselves but this does not mean that their workmanship will necessarily be superior to that of a smaller contractor.
Working with a contractor should be a smooth process. You should be kept informed of any delays in the project. Schedules can be difficult to keep, especially if it's a large project that involves weather or multiple types of renovations. Very often a project has to happen in stages and your contractor or project manager should keep you abreast of the progress of the remodeling project.
