Invest in a good thermostat and make sure it's properly installed, it'll save you money in the long run. Not sure how warranties last on most of them, pretty sure they are void if you open up? If that's the case you can always put on more clothes and have a mobile space heater which you take anywhere you go!

A sure-fire way to maintain the life of your thermostat is to run it at the heating or cooling levels recommended by the manufacturer. Homeowners that fluctuate temperatures too much wear down the components with alarming speed. Your geographic locale will dictate your acceptable levels. Stick to them and your thermostat should last much longer.
