I've heard others have issues like you're having but it's usually been because they had one of the smaller tubs and chose a smaller clawfoot tub shower curtain... so they said it felt kind of claustrophobic.. I guess that's probably accurate. If you want to make one more attempt though you may want to try an Oval curtain rod. It will add at least a few inches of room on each side which can make a huge difference. Hope that helps!
