Kira, although you have several options when selecting an energy-efficient light bulb to replace your traditional 100 watt incandescent bulb, keep in mind that the quality and color of light is going to differ from option to option, so try to catch a glimpse of a sample bulb before you buy. One popular brand of compact fluorescent bulb is GE's 26 watt CFL, which produces 1750 lumens of light (similar to a 100 watt incandescent) and reportedly lasts for 8000 hours. These bulbs are readily available at hardware stores and home improvement warehouses and sell for about $19 per 6 pack. Another option is a LED replacement bulb, but keep in mind that some LED's cost over $20 per bulb.

Obviously light bulb technology is changing rapidly as manufacturers try to meet the ever increasing demand for energy efficient lighting products. As you search for the replacement bulbs that are right for your house, make sure to read the fine print on any lighting product you buy. Unfortunately, not all CFL's and LED's can be used with all dimmer switches, and in most cases the quality and color of the light is different from traditional incandescent light bulbs.
