The tall brick chimney on our North Carolina cabin is beginning to lean away from the house. Right now there is only about a foot of space there, but I know it will grow. What can I do about this?

If there is already a foot of space between your house and chimney, you have a very serious problem. Leaning brick chimneys can be very dangerous. I would not recommend trying to fix the problem yourself. I would call a mason or a chimney specialist to come out and evaluate your situation. With that kind of separation it could fall over any time. A chimney collapse can be devastating. Be very careful!
I had a similar problem, and hired a contractor who was able to jack up the chimney, pour a new footing under the brick chimney, and then reattached it to the house. I wasn’t cheap, but the chimney is an important part of the look of our farm house.
