What is an easy patio brick pattern?

Answered by Brendan ~ March 18, 2010 ~ Comments

I want to install a brick patio in our backyard but I'm not sure what is the easiest patio pattern for beginners and one that will hold up best in our Illinois climate. What do you suggest?

I have found that in any brick patio the brick laying is the fun easy part. Getting everything ready for the bricks is the hard part. It is very important that you take the time to prep the area for the bricks properly. Check the width and length so that you can finish your area with full bricks and not a bunch of small ripped brick pieces. Any radius will create lots of brick cutting. You will also want to look at what is growing near your new brick patio. If you have some trees that are going to grow into large trees you may want to consider the possibility of roots growing under and heaving up your bricks. If you think you will want outdoor lighting or a water feature, it will be a good idea to run a chase under the patio for future electrical or plumbing. Once you have everything prepped and ready for bricks the easiest pattern is a 50% staggered pattern. This should minimize your cuts and install very easily. Bricks should hold up just fine in your Illinois climate. Good Luck!
