What are the negatives on installing new countertops over old ones?

Answered by Brendan ~ October 8, 2010 ~ No Comments » | Respond to this question

I have tile countertops now they are very old and chipped in places. I want to install new countertops over it. Are there negatives to installing new countertops over old ones?

There can be negatives to installing new countertops over old countertops. Some of these are, that you may have to continue using your old sink, your counter top height will increase, and the backsplash will grow in both height and thickness. If you have an under-mount sink it will become much deeper in the countertop. Faucets that once mounted to the old countertop may not work in the new top due to the additional thickness. Every kitchen is unique, so there may be other issues specific to your kitchen that I cannot advise you on with out seeing it. I would advise getting a bid from a company that specializes in this sort of work, this way you can get a clear understanding for what the scope of work will be. Good Luck!
