Room Additions in Anchorage, Alaska
We want to bump out exterior walls that face our northwest view to create a dining nook beyond the kitchen and a home office beyond a seldom-used walk-in closet. Both additions would be 8' x 8'. To maximize the view I'd like fixed-pane maximum insulated windows about 7'h x 6'w on all three walls of both room additions. How much extra in initial cost and heating bills would this cost over 4'h x 6'w windows?
Countertop Choice for Kitchen Remodeling
For kitchen remodeling in our Rome, New York, townhome we're going for a contemporary look. I'd like granite countertops. My wife says if you can't actually cut food on granite, why not save money and get granite-looking laminate countertops and use cutting boards on them. Percentage-wise, how much more expensive is granite?
A Hot Tub for a Deck
We have an 8' x 10' deck off our second-story master bedroom in Greenville, South Carolina. It is braced with 2" x 8" supports. What's a rough cost, if it's even feasible, to strengthen the deck and add plumbing to accommodate a 2-person hot tub? Plumbing access (sink, toilet) from the bathroom is close by on the same exterior wall.
Basement Addition on a Sloping Lot
Our Salem, Oregon, home has 7' high visible pilings supporting the gradually sloping downhill side. We'd like to create basement addition storage room 10' x 12', with an internal stairway from the kitchen. The slope has deep soil that would have to be excavated. The alternative is to excavate a level area and outside steps and build a free-standing storage room of the same size. Which would be more cost-effective?
Labor Cost for Installing a New Kitchen Backsplash
My kitchen remodeling dream is simple: I want to install those beautiful new small tile, stone, or glass backsplash materials that come grouped on a mesh backing. I want it to go from the top of my kitchen counter to the bottom of my overhead cupboards, with a separate bar-like accent band at midpoint. There are six electrical switch plates or sockets and the length is 18 linear feet. Please give me a ballpark cost for having the installation done over the existing drywall.
Florida Microwave Oven That Vents to the Outside
My Pensacola, Florida, kitchen gets steamy enough without my microwave/vent unit blowing smoke and steam back into the room. To replace it with a microwave/hood combination that vents to the outside, I assume a duct has to be run through the cabinet over the range and up through the attic. If that's correct, what's a ballpark kitchen remodeling figure for a microwave/convection/hood unit and the job of creating an exhaust to the outside?

The house we bought has new kitchen cabinets and we asked that the old cabinets be left in the garage. We can use them in the garage for storage. There's a six-foot run and an eight foot run of upper and lower cabinets. Approximately what might it cost to get them installed?
Insulated Garage Doors for Heating & Cooling Assistance in Ogden, Utah
Our triple-car garage in Ogden, Utah, faces west. Even with ceiling and wall insulation it gets really hot in the summer and really cold in the winter. We'd be happy with around 83 degrees in the summer and 50 degrees in the winter. Would it be more cost-effective to install through-the-wall heating and cooling units or to purchase insulated garage doors?

We want to remove wall-to-wall carpeting in our 14' x 14' living room and put in medium-priced engineered hardwood flooring. About how much would it increase the materials and installation costs if the wood is laid in a hexagonal pattern with an 18" straight border, versus having all the planks laid parallel to each other?
Is Artificial Turf Landscaping Cost-Effective for Private Homes?
We like the cool green look of a grass yard, but want to be water-wise with the new home we'll be building soon near Sioux City, Iowa. For trees and ornamentals we'll use drip irrigation. It may be heretical, but we're thinking of artificial turf. Over a 15-year period, what are the costs--sod, installation, water, fertilizer, moving, weeding-- of real grass versus artificial turf landscaping?
