Why do my downstairs windows leak inside, around the window trim at the tops when a driving rain hits? The windows are leaking up top and are wood and vinyl. I have caulked all the way around the window itself where the brick meets the wood. What am I missing?
It seems logical to me that metal roofing would get hot and add heat to the house. Yet it's supposed to be energy efficient. If I use metal roofing in Nashville, will it save monthly utility costs?
Our back door on our main floor that leads to the outside deck is leaking from the top and then coming down the inside of the door and leaking up under our inside wood floor. Need help to fix. We had one contractor already try to fix it and it did not work. Is there anything I can do on my own to fix this problem?
I've chosen granite tile for our new kitchen. I've read that granite bullnoses hold up better under long wear than, say, wood trim. I don't like the look of wood trim around granite counters anyway. How much can I expect to pay for having bullnoses custom-built by the installers? I've heard up to $20 an edge.
Our home is 18 yrs old and we recently began having big problems with leaking roof. When a roofer went to look he was surprised that there wasn't any paper between the plywood and the shingles. Is this typical? How can I find out if it's a code violation? Can I take this up with the builder? We have had small leaking or roofing problems in the eight years we've lived here. This last damage that took shingles off the roof has really caused the on going problem of not being able to find a competent roofer who can permanently fix the problem. Also, all the problems occur over the garage area not the higher area of the rest of the house.
I'm remodeling my kitchen and thinking of installing a kitchen island, but I live in a condo here in Nashville and I have a small kitchen (about 8 by 9 feet). Should I install an island or consider other additions instead?
I live in a basement rancher w/finished downstairs, however, my floors upstairs have squeaky spots throughout. The house is about 28 yrs old and I want to begin doing some remodeling such as wood floors, new bathtub, new kitchen flooring, etc. But first I need to know what kind of expense I'm looking at to get rid of the squeaky floors.
Some of my Chatanooga, TN, kitchen countertops were scoured too hard and have scratches. I'm thinking of replacing them myself, as I made laminate countertops for my workshop. Can new laminate be applied over existing, or must I also make new kitchen countertops?
The siding on our home in Nashville has faded and the color is ugly now. I have considered replacing it and hear that you can install vinyl siding over existing siding. Is it true and what considerations are there before we bring someone in?
