Painting Wood Paneling

Answered by Brendan ~ May 1, 2010 ~ Comments

After spending hours and hours peeling layers of wallpaper off the walls of our living room, we reached WOOD PANELING! We had only budgeted to do the painting ourselves. How much does it cost to drywall a 15' X 12' room? Assuming we can't afford that, what is the best paint process on wood paneling?

Wood paneling is generally installed over sheetrock, so I would try to remove the paneling from the sheetrock. If you can get it off without destroying the sheetrock you can have a sheetrock contractor retexture your walls. You can figure that having a room retextured will cost roughly $350 - $500. If the walls are destroyed while trying to get the paneling off, you will need to re-sheetrock the walls and you are looking at roughly $700-$900 if the room is flat and square with eight foot ceilings. If you decide to paint the paneling I would start with a good primer and use a quality latex paint. Good Luck!
