Installing a new front door

Answered by Brendan ~ February 27, 2012 ~ No Comments » | Respond to this question

When my house was built, we opted for a standard-sized, solid panel front door. Now we would like to hire a contractor to install a new front door with sidelights. Our house is sided in brick, any idea how much this project might cost?

For starters, the scope of this project may bigger than you might think. There is going to be some demolition, there will also be a fair amount of framing to enlarge the opening which will likely require installing a longer and possible larger header. You may have to relocate electrical on both the inside as well as the exterior depending on where switches, outlets and lights are located. Sometimes structural hold downs are located on the king studs next to a front door and those may have to be moved. There will be the installation of the new door, possible sheetrock repair, interior trim, exterior finish, and paint. Brick siding/construction can be labor intensive to get a modification to disappear. Even with all this in mind it is still difficult to give any very meaningful cost estimate without seeing the project first hand and a detailed list of the materials to be used. A front door with sidelights can range in price from $500 to $5000, so, I think it is safe to say that that you can figure on spending between, $1500 to $3500, for a new front door with side lights, as long as you don't go with a $5000 door.
