How to Refinish Wood Flooring

Answered by Jeffrey ~ February 25, 2010 ~ Comments

The wood flooring in my St. Louis home has seen a lot of wear and tear. It has nicks, dents, stains, and a dull finish. How do I go about refinishing it?

Hi Peter, You don't mention how large of an area of wood flooring you have, but it sounds like you might have a fairly large amount. When I say large amount I mean more than one room, like a study. If you have more than one room, I definitely recommend that you find a reputable hardwood flooring contractor to give you a price. It will be well worth it to you, as refinishing hardwood floors is hard work, if you don't have the skill or the proper tools, and if you aren't careful, you can damage your floors. I would think that there would be quite a few hardwood flooring contractors around St. Louis.

They will come in with large sanders, and take the floor down to bare wood. The sanders will take care of most of the small nicks and stains. Any boards that are damaged beyond repair can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the floor. They will then give you a choice of stains, or you may want to have it finished natural. Once it has been stained with a finish, they then put a semi-gloss or satin polyurethane coating on to protect the finish. Refinishing your hardwood floors can make your house look new, refinishing the hardwood is one of my favorite parts of remodeling a home.
