How to Fix a Cracking Poured Basement Wall?

Answered by Brendan ~ March 1, 2010 ~ 7 Comments » | Respond to this question

After a particularly wet Ohio rain season, I noticed a small crack in my poured concrete basement wall. Is there a simple way to fix the crack before it gets worse?

It depends on what you are trying to fix. If you are trying to keep the crack from growing or becoming larger there is not much you can do. You can try to cover it with a patch, but if the crack is going to continue moving, the patch is going to crack with it. If you are worried that this crack is going to start leaking water into your basement, I would still patch it and keep checking it for water leakage. Cracks happen, they happen all the time with concrete, there is an old expression that I have heard when it comes to concrete; there are two types of concrete, cracked concrete and concrete that hasn't cracked yet. Chances are the crack is merely cosmetic if proper waterproofing measures were taken during the construction of the wall. If it turns into a water problem you will have to take a different course of action.
