How to Create Above-Garage Storage

Answered by Brendan ~ February 27, 2010 ~ Comments

I have a large empty space above my Denver garage. I want to use it for storage. What is the best way to convert the space for storage and provide easy access?

First, I am going to address the first half of this question, attic storage space. Attic storage is kind of a misnomer; attics are not typically engineered for storage. This means that the ceiling is designed to hold sheetrock, not you and your 10,000lbs of stuff. When attic space is designated as storage space during the planning phase of construction, a structural engineer will have to assume that you are going to subject that space to some very serious loads, and it will be built very differently from your typical attic. Therefore the easy way to convert is to start by talking with a structural engineer, they will tell you what you can and can't put up there. The access part is easy, there are many different types of attic ladders to choose from and they are generally an easy install.
