How many coats of paint for primed wall?

How many coats of paint should you put on a wall that is newly renovated and primed?

Cynth, thanks for the question. I believe that a great looking paint job requires 2 coats of paint, in addition to the underlying primer coat. Although many paint companies do advertise premium quality paints that may adequately cover a wall with a single coat, I prefer to apply a second coat of paint to cover up any imperfections from the first coat.

These imperfections, such as brush or roller marks, are not always noticeable until the first coat of paint completely dries, and that second coat can ensure a quality looking paint job that is flawless!

Can a latex paint be applied over an oil based primer? Is it a problem to cover latex paint with oil based paints. thanks.

Thanks for the question Jack. Yes, a latex paint, or an acrylic oil based paint, can be applied over an oil based primer. In general, the type of primer does not dictate which type of paint you must use. However, if you are applying new paint over existing paint, you should not apply new oil based paint over existing latex paint. In this case you would need to put a primer coat on first, and then apply the new oil based paint.

  2. in determining the amount of coats of paint for a primed wall, there are several factors to consider. is the wall new? is the primer tinted? what is the quality of the paint determined by the viscosity? what type of napped roller head are you using? what type of finish is on the wall? and what sheen of paint are you using? are you willing to spend the little extra money for that second coat of finish paint, labor and materials? when all these factors are considered, you can then determine if you should use a second coat or not. most of the time, especially for the average homeowner, i would say definitely put a second coat on to ensure a nice evenly distributed layer of paint. if you are hiring a professional, leave it up to the company to determine if a second coat is necessary.

Hi Mike, Thanks for your help. Our land lord hired a very nice painter who has put down one coat without a primer and the rooms do not look wonderful. Is it reasonable for me to request a second coat on the walls that have already been painted- even a primer and two coats on the last room to be painted? Thank you, I look forward to your reply. Sincerely, Viola
