How deep should a foundation be for my room addition?

Answered by Brendan ~ January 12, 2011 ~ Comments

I am looking to expand with a room addition. It will be one story, 20 x 24 with 2' crawl space. How deep should the foundation be?

Danny, I can't tell you exactly how deep your foundation footings need to be. A structural engineer will ultimately have to determine the depth and width of the foundation based off of a set of plans. Different areas in the country have different footing requirements. Here in California, nothing seems to be typical from job to job. Depending on elevation, snow loads, frost depth, type of soil, type of structure, seismic requirements, etc. foundations can vary dramatically. The best way to get a concrete answer for this question would be to talk to your local building department and find out what is required for single story residential foundations. They will probably be able to tell you exactly what you need to do for your foundation. Good Luck!
