How can I install ceramic tile over exterior concrete?

Answered by Brendan ~ May 14, 2012 ~ No Comments » | Respond to this question

We have a concrete patio in our back yard that we would like to cover with ceramic tiles. How can I attach the tiles to the existing concrete patio? Can I use regular grout to to fill the gaps in the tile?

I would use a modified thinset mortar for attaching the tiles to your patio. As for filling the spaces between the tiles, I would use a sanded tile grout if you space the tiles more than an eighth inch apart and non-sanded if the spacing is less than an eighth inch. There are a variety of grout colors to choose from, if you don't want grey, however pick a color that will work okay with dirt that could get ground into the grout. I would also like to mention that some ceramic tiles are very slippery when wet, so make sure that the tiles you selected will not be too much of a slip hazard when wet. Good Luck!
