Where can I find a list of subcontractors I could hire a new construction custom home?

Jess, there are a number of good resources for finding subcontractors for your new home. My first suggestion would be to look for homes under construction in your immediate area.

In many parts of the country, there is a shortage of reputable subcontractors with extensive experience. That could result in you not getting much cooperation from construction managers or superintendents on housing projects being done by national or larger regional home builders. If they have reputable subcontractors, it's more than likely that they may not want to share. On the other hand, if they aren't keeping their contractors completely busy, it's better to share with someone constructing a single home rather than taking a chance on losing them to another big builder.

Still, I'd look first for single homes being constructed by local homebuilders. In my experience, smaller builders, or the owners of the homes they are building, are usually more than happy to talk about the subcontractors they believe are doing a good job on their projects. They can also tell you about any contractors that should be avoided for various reasons.

Another place that should be able to provide a list of subcontractors is your local homebuilders association. Even though many of the members will be actual builders, there are often subcontractors who belong and who attend meetings. If you choose this route, I recommend checking the references of any subcontractor you consider hiring. Just because they attend meetings or belong to the association doesn't necessarily mean they're reputable.

Lastly, you might fill out and return the form on this website. Reliable Remodeler maintains a network of reputable subcontractors who are pre-screened and certified, and all are licensed, bonded, and insured.* I'm not sure where you're located, but there's a good chance Reliable Remodeler can connect you with qualified subcontractors in the area.
