Do you recommend installing shut-off valves for all in-flow appliances throughout a house? ie. toilet, sinks, etc.?
Our patio doors are very prominent in our great room and I love the look of French doors. Because we live in Tallahassee, my kids are in and out all year long so I don't think French doors would be functional. How can I find functional doors that still look pretty?
Is there a most effective method for fastening drywall to studs? I've seen a couple of different methods for attaching drywall. Method 1 involved separating nails/screws vertically about every vertical foot or so along the stud. Method 2 grouped 2 nails/screws (about 3 inches apart) vertically about every 1.5 – 2 feet. The grouping method seems most desirable from a plastering perspective (less places to apply & sand) but is one method better than the other?
Our mild climate in Santa Barbara, CA, encourages informal entertaining. When dining inside, the food prep mess on the kitchen counter is visible to my guests. The counter has a same-level breakfast bar on the dining room side which is seldom used. How can I attractively screen the kitchen counter yet still interact with my guests while I'm cooking?
I just recently bought a house that's ten years old. I'm making a list of checkpoints for repairs and evaluations. My current focus is the windows. They're fairly standard, but some do show signs of wear and tear. What are the features I should look at to know if I should be replacing windows or not?
Several of the doors in my house are crooked--I can see light peeking through cracks at the corners. I assume this is because my house is doing a fair amount of settling after several years. What's the most common fix for doors that are uneven?
The exterior of my house needs painting and I know I can't do the work myself. However, my neighbors recently got burned by a painting contractor who did shoddy work and refused to fix the problems. How can I be sure I'm choosing a reliable contractor so this doesn't happen to me?
