Is There a Way to Hang Art On a Fieldstone Wall?

I have some walls in my home build of fieldstone, is there a way to hang anything on these walls? There are places with exposed mortar that I thought I might be able to use.

Dan, it can be challenging to hang framed art on an interior stone wall, but you do have a couple of options. First, you could install a concrete screw and wall anchor into the mortar between the field stone. The best way to do this is to drill a pilot hole for the screw using a drill bit specifically made for concrete, then set the screw about 3/4 of the way into the wall. Be aware that if the mortar is old, you risk it cracking or crumbling under the pressure of the drill bit, so work carefully. To secure the artwork to the screw, you may need to wrap the frame wire around the screw a few times to prevent the wire from slipping over the head of the screw.

A second option would be to hang the framed art work from the ceiling using clear fishing line, which is both strong and not easily seen. Obviously you would need to set some sort of sturdy anchor into the ceiling to support the weight of the artwork. When hanging the framed artwork, you can position the piece close to the wall, or leave a few inches of space between the wall and the back of the frame, which can create an interesting floating effect for the piece.
