Garage Trusses Need to Be Reinforce

Answered by Brendan ~ June 19, 2010 ~ No Comments

I want to add a walk-in closet over my garage. The garage was built with standard trusses and I will need to reinforce the area. Who could give me the answers I need to redesign the trusses? The garage is 32 foot wide with a 10/12 pitch. I want to build a 13 foot wide walk in closet in the center of this span. Anything specific I should ask a potential contractor?

Generally an engineer designs trusses, so you would need to have an engineer redesign the trusses to accommodate the additional load of the closet. This kind of modification can almost always be done from within the attic space with zero impact on the roof or the space below. I would try to get all the structural drawings and calculations from the engineer before I began looking for a contractor. It is much easier for contractors to bid a job and provide you with accurate cost numbers when you can hand them a set of drawings first. Things that might be good to ask a potential contractor; ask is if this is the sort of work that they typically do, ask for references, ask how long they have been in business, ask for proof of their license, bond and insurance. One you have working drawings this sounds like it would be a very straightforward project. Good Luck!
