Explain the Combined Costs of Roofing Installation and Materials

Answered by Brendan ~ August 20, 2010 ~ No Comments

I assume that some roofing products are more expensive to purchase, but less expensive to install, or visa versa. Considering roofing material cost and labor together, what's a rough cost per square foot for roofs such as asphalt shakes, Mexican tile, and metal panel?

It is virtually impossible to give even a rough cost estimate without knowing at least a little bit about your roof. Is there going to be a tear off? If there is a tear off, is there more than one roof to tear off? How steep is the roof? Is the roof very complicated with many hips, ridges, and valleys? Is the old roof framing structurally sound? Does it need new roof sheathing? Are there multiple chimneys, pluming penetrations, and skylights? Does it need new flashings? Are the old roof and attic properly ventilated? Do you live in a neighborhood where CC&R's dictate what type of roofing you must have? Depending on how these questions are answered, you can easily change the cost of a roof up to 65%. I don't think I can accurately give you pricing but I can give you a range, Spanish Tile - $17-26sq/ft, Metal - $17-24sq/ft, Comp $8-13sq/ft. This is a California price range and this may be different in Texas. I would call multiple local roofing contractors and get estimates, this will provide information about your roofing options, are and their associated costs. Good Luck!
