Efficient Toilet for Bathroom Remodeling

We're redoing the fixtures in our 40-year old Houston, Texas, bathrooms. What will I have to pay for water-wise, truly quiet, truly plug-resistant toilets?

Katlyn, almost every brand of toilet offers some sort of "new" flushing technology that is supposed to eliminate clogged toilets, but of course it all depends on what is put into the toilet. Likewise, most toilet manufacturers offer water-saving half flush models, which use less than a gallon of water instead of the standard 1.6 gallon flush. Both the Kohler Persuade and the Toto Aquia sell for about $300 each and offer the half-flush option. These are very basic models, and of course each company offers higher priced toilets which have more options and features. There is even a company that claims their toilet can flush a bucket of golf balls without clogging!

In general, I would chose a reliable brand such as Kohler, American Standard, or Toto, and purchase a model that has the half flush option. If you are going to hire a plumber to install the toilets for you, then you may want to inquire about any cost-saving discounts that he can offer. Plumbers are also great resources for product endorsements, as they are the ones who normally get called about clogged or broken toilets. Good luck with your bathroom remodel!
