How Much Should It Cost to Move and Upgrade my Electrical Box?

Answered by Brendan ~ September 19, 2011 ~ No Comments » | Respond to this question

I need to move my electrical box and would like to have it recess into the wall. We were also considering upgrading our panel from 150 amps to 200 amps. How much should I expect to pay a contractor for this job?

I wish I could give you a price for what you want but there are some variables that will drastically affect the cost of this project. Without actually seeing the exact details of what you want done, I can't give you any meaningful cost analysis. An electrical box is a generic term that can mean many different things. Is the box you are referring to have just your electrical meter in it? Does it have your meter and breakers in it? Is it just a sub panel with breakers in it and no meter? Is it an interior or exterior panel? If it is a meter panel and you want to move it, you will need to contact your utility company, because they will typically want to know where you plan to move it and they will have to turn the power off to the panel so it can be moved. If you want to upgrade your current service to a higher amperage service, again, you will have to contact your utility provider to see if it is even a possibility. Often times the wires running to you house are only rated for the service amperage you are currently receiving. To increase your service amperage would mean increasing your service wire size and possibly even replacing the transformer servicing your home. You can put a 200 amp panel in and keep you 150 amp service and this will give you more room for breakers, but you will need to be careful not to overload your 150 amp service. This all sounds daunting but a couple of calls to your electrical service provider, your local building department, and a local electrician, should answer all of the question you have. It seems like this should be a simple job and it very well may be, but you need more information first before you can hang a cost on this project. Good Luck!
