How Much Would It Cost to Replace Sidelites on Front Door?

I would like to replace the sidelites in my front door. How much would it cost to replace sidelites on a home front door measuring 28"x76"?

Donita, keep in mind that when you replace the sidelights adjacent to your home's front door, you will need to purchase tempered glass units. Tempered glass is a type of safety glass that is usually installed next to access doors or in window frames that are situated close to ground level. When broken, tempered glass crumbles into small cubes instead of into large shards, which helps prevent serious injuries to a person who comes into contact with a broken window. In fact, this is the same type of safety glass that is used in automobiles.

If you can locate a glass shop that carries stock-sized tempered glass panels, which your needed size is darn close too, then you can expect to pay about $400 for both pieces of glass. If not then you should expect to pay about $800 for the pair, because they will be priced as custom cuts or a special order. Depending on the construction of your specific front door, the tempered glass panels that you order will have no frames, but rather they will be double-pane panels that are just sealed around the edges. You will then have to install the panels into the existing frames, which are probably part of your front door unit.

If you are not able to install the glass yourself, then you will need to hire someone to complete the work for you. Although you can always hire a contractor to do the installation, the glass store where you purchase the panels may be able to do the entire job for you at a reasonable cost.
