Cost for Electrical Upgrade

Answered by Brett ~ June 9, 2010 ~ No Comments

We live in an older home in Richmond and want to replace the knob-and-tube wiring. Can you give us a ballpark estimate for electrical labor? We took a few bids and the hourly is much too high. Can you suggest a good source for getting more competitive bids?

Kelly, I do not know what the hourly rates for electrical work are in the Richmond area, but in my city a licensed electrician commonly gets between $50-$75 per hour. I have also found that the hourly rates tend to be similar amongst tradespeople who are state licensed and unionized, and electricians usually fall into this category. If you have been unhappy with the contractor estimates which you have already received for your remodeling project, then I suggests you fill out this form, and let reliableremodeler help you obtain some more bids from qualified electricians who work in the Richmond area.

Replacing your knob-and-tube wiring is a good idea, as a updated electrical system can make your home safer, easier to insure, and quite possibly easier to sell or refinance at a later date. Oftentimes, these types of home improvements can be expensive, because new wiring and electrical equipment will have to be installed throughout your house. The good news is that a new, code-compliant electrical system can last for a very long time.
