Can solar film on windows be removed?

Answered by Brendan ~ July 6, 2010 ~ 1 Comments » | Respond to this question

I had solar film (for sun protection) put on windows to prevent fading of furniture. The film is clouded now. Can it be removed? If so what's the best way to go about it?

Yes the film can be removed. Auto parts stores usually sell window tint removal products; some are better than others depending on what you are trying to remove. I would not be able to say for sure which product may work best in your situation. Ammonia can be used to remove the solar film; it is a tricky process but usually an effective one. Use the ammonia at full strength and spray the entire window on the solar film side. Then let the ammonia set on the window for about an hour. You will want to trap the ammonia against the glass using plastic food wrap. Once the ammonia has had a chance to loosen up the film, use a straight razor blade to scrape it off the glass. Be sure to follow all of the manufacturers instructions when using ammonia and cover anything in the room that may come in contact with full strength ammonia. It is a slow process at first but once you get the hang of it goes pretty fast. Good Luck!
