Can I remove my house's second level in order to create a taller ceiling height in my living room?

I want to remove a second floor bedroom above the living room that is on the first floor of my house so that I can create a higher ceiling for the living room? Is this possibe, what are the pitfalls?

Expanding the ceiling heights in your house may be possible, but obviously any remodeling project of that caliber would need a structural engineer and an experienced home builder to orchestrate the details. Making alterations to a house's structural members, or removing critical portions of its framing, can cause unforeseen load transfers that can quite literally bring the house down! Of course there might be some instances when you could safely remove non-load bearing floor joists from a home's second level, which would effectively double the ceiling height in the underlying living room, but you'll need to have a contractor inspect your home and help to make that call.
