Can I expand the size of my home's basement?

Answered by Brendan ~ April 23, 2012 ~ 1 Comments » | Respond to this question

Is it possible to remove one of my basement walls so that I can expand the size of the basement. Currently, the 4 basement walls are solid concrete and sit directly under the perimeter of the house, which means that the expanded basement would extend beyond the footprint of the house? What do you think of this idea?

Yes, it is possible to remove basement walls and expand a basement. I think that expanding a basement is going to cost a lot more money that expanding the house above. I suppose it could make some sense if your expanded basement does not increase the taxable square footage of your home, but the savings in taxes will never pay for the premium cost of adding onto a basement. Ultimately, this is a decision that you will have to make on your own. There is no right or wrong answer here, just what will bring you the most happiness.
