Can I build a closet with a baseboard heater in it?

Answered by Brett ~ March 5, 2012 ~ No Comments » | Respond to this question

I want to build a new closet in the corner of my bedroom, but there is an existing baseboard heater located on the wall that would become the inside of the closet. Is it okay to enclose a baseboard heater in a closet?

Lisa, you should definitely check with your local building department before you proceed to remodel your bedroom. The only way to know for sure if a heater located in your closet would be code compliant in Minneapolis would be to carefully review the electrical and building codes for your specific local area. Keep in mind, one potential problem with your proposed project might be the loss of heat in the other areas of your bedroom. Likewise, if your existing baseboard heater was sized to heat your entire bedroom, but then you enclose the heater in a small closet, the potential exists for a very warm closet and a very cold bedroom.
