Is There a Proper Way to Bend Back a Metal Stud?

Hi Jared. I'm not aware of any way to straighten metal studs without removing sheetrock from the walls. I'm actually wondering if the problem might be something else other than bent metal studs as it can take a lot to bend the type of studs used in a commercial building.

Hi Jared. I'm not aware of any way to straighten metal studs without removing sheetrock from the walls. I'm actually wondering if the problem might be something else other than bent metal studs as it can take a lot to bend the type of studs used in a commercial building. They're usually a fairly heavy gauge and not prone to being bent easily -- especially from a shower rod.

It's possible that there was only one screw used in the top, bottom, or both ends of the studs and they may be twisting which is giving the appearance of them being bent. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to fix this either without removing some sheetrock. The sheetrock on your walls is screwed into the studs and they aren't going to twist back unless those screws are removed.

I assume you own this condo and aren't just renting. If that's the case, I think the only way you're going to correct the problem is by removing sheetrock and seeing what is going on back there. I don't think the problem is bending as having one bent stud would be unusual -- having several in the same bathroom would be highly odd. If the bends were toward the bathroom, I would suspect some drain lines that were too large for the wall thickness, but that wouldn't be the case for a dip in the wall away from the bath.

If it's bad enough that it's noticeable, I would go ahead and remove the sheetrock. It sounds like you already have a project going on in there anyway if you're removing the vanity and the sink.
