Are Marble kitchen countertops a bad idea?

Answered by Brendan ~ February 17, 2010 ~ 2 Comments » | Respond to this question

I really love the detail of marble but have been told it is a bad idea for kitchens because it's soft and damages with acid juices and even water. Would it really be that bad? How much worse would it be than granite? Would it just be terrible in 5 years?

Yes marble is softer than granite, and yes marble stains easier than granite. Is marble worse than granite? I don't think one is any worse than the other, I just think that marble represents a working surface that is going to require more vigilance than granite. If marble is properly cared for, it will last a lifetime. The real question here, is how much care and maintenance do you want to deal with, marble will represent more work that other options.
